This paper is primarily concerned with the direct effects of wind and rain on buildings and other structures during tropical cyclones and the potential for insurance loss arising from them. It does not address indirect effects of wind and rain such as wave action in conjunction with storm surge inundation, or riverine flooding. Factors discussed in this paper include the nature of losses arising from wind and rain, the characteristics of tropical cyclone winds, the influence of building regulations on potential losses, and the problems of predicting damage losses...
