by George R. Walker
In his keynote paper, Dennis Mileti puts forward the concept of a 'sustainable hazard mitigation', based on an holistic view of disasters being the result of complex interactions between the physical environment, the social and demographic characteristics of communities that experience them, and the built environment. By way of reply, this paper identifies what the author considers are key factors in the mitigation policies of Australia and New Zealand.
